What a Difference a Smile Makes
Submitted by: Seshat Young
Philadelphia, PAI am a college student who has wavered in her commitment to the teachings of The Secret for 5 years. I am restoring my faith in the Universe and giving thanks for all the wonderful things it brings into my life.
I’ve known about The Secret for years but I have been inconsistent in my practice. I’ve attracted a few things that I attributed to The Law of Attraction, but anytime I’d focus on something I consider big, I didn’t receive it in the specified time frame. I watched The Secret two times in three weeks trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and I found it: I wasn’t emotionally in alignment with what I wanted.
I wasn’t happy while I was dwelling on things. I would use visualization as a means to cheer myself up, when it should have been the other way around. You have to feel good to attract what you want. I knew I had to be happy, the question then became, what is it that makes me happy? I spent weeks trying to figure out what I could do that would make me happy under any circumstances. I read a research report about how the simple act of smiling can make you feel happy. It’s as if your body knows how to feel when that expression is made and adjusts itself accordingly, whether organic happiness is present or not. Yesterday, I decided to keep a smile on my face for the entire day and see if that made a difference.
It worked instantly!
A pair of keys I’d been looking for for weeks suddenly appeared. I ran into people I hadn’t seen in a while and made an insightful comment in my neurophysiology class, the hardest course I have. As I was laughing and joking with a few of my neighbors on our way to a football game (a huge deal since I have Social Anxiety Disorder), I get invited on an all-expense-paid trip to Switzerland to sing for the UN by a music teacher. I haven’t spoken to this music teacher in three years! That night, I had an amazing conversation with my boyfriend after I woke up from a nightmare. It was 3:15AM, so it was unlikely that he would be awake, but he was, and that talk saved our crumbling relationship.
I challenge you to hold a constant smile on your face for a day. I bet it will change your life.
