This past February my father became very weak and tired. My mother and I thought he was just fighting a cold being that he had a complete physical and passed with flying colors 2 months earlier. Within a week he could not get out of bed. He was rushed to the hospital, completely dehydrated, in kidney failure, and needed several blood transfusions. The doctors ordered a bone marrow test and dialysis and informed us he most likely would need dialysis for the rest of his life. He was transferred to ICU for further testing.

A few days later I was on my way to see him and a doctor called me from ICU and asked me to come down to the hospital because he and his team needed to speak with me. I rushed down there, and the team was waiting for me in the ICU “family room”. They explained that my Dad probably would not make it, he could have heart failure at any moment and I needed to prepare myself as well as my Mom. I started crying but then I pulled myself together and started thinking about him getting through this and being healthy again.

The next day the doctor came in and told us that he would not need dialysis anymore and he only had 2 rounds! Slowly my Dad started improving. The doctors told me he still was not out of the woods yet and they were waiting for the bone marrow results. I told them I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I knew my Dad was going to be OK as soon as I said those words. I refused to think negatively and boy did I sure feel utter joy at the moment!

After 2 months my Dad finally did come home. He was diagnosed with Leukemia and was prescribed 2 chemo pills daily. A few weeks ago my Dad had bloodwork done and his doctor called and told him to start taking 1 chemo pill instead of 2! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
