Finding My Dream Job
Submitted by: Maria N.
New York, NYBorn in Illinois, raised in Athens, Greece, and currently residing in New York, I am an English Professor when I'm working and a poet when I'm not.
Besides teaching as an English Professor at a local college, I also work as the head Creative Writing Coach at the New York City Boys Club. I loved the position I currently held, but wanted another one at another clubhouse, so that I could expand my position further outward, as the Creative Writing Director. I set the intention, that I would obtain another Boys Club position and slowly make my name as a major director.
Roughly five weeks after watching “The Secret,” a Boys Club event just RANDOMLY happened to be held at a different venue–one where events are seldom held. I attended with a friend of mine who just happened to have worked at The Boys Club as a major director for a number of years, who just happened to know the woman who ran the new Clubhouse. He pointed her out to me. I remembered what “The Secret” said about acting for expediency’s sake. I ran over and gave her my card.
For the next two weeks, nothing happened. But, I kept my mind focused on my goal. I wrote out my job and posted it above my desk. I journaled about it constantly. I visualized walking in to my job.
Then, I got a phone call from an unfamiliar area code. Sure enough, it was the Clubhouse director I had met with just weeks ago. She offerred me the position, said she wanted to move forward ASAP.
And here I am. I have since begun working with the Multi-Cultural Arts Director on integrating Creative Writing into all three of the Clubhouses. Without even knowing it, I have not only obtained my dream job; I have also begun to pave the way for an even bigger position I didn’t even know I wanted–one as Creative Writing Director.
