I had my first child at age 33. About two years later my husband and I decided to try for another child. We had not tried to prevent pregnancy for those two years but we were not really “trying” for a child either, so it was not a big deal that we did not get pregnant right away.

Since the first one came so easily, we thought for sure this would be an easy process. I finally saw a fertility specialist who fixed a blocked fallopian tube and removed endometriosis. I figured that pregnancy would happen right away since it was “my” problem.

Several months went by and NOTHING.

Earlier that year I had seen the Oprah show, that I did not normally watch, that was all about The Secret. I had heard of vision boards before but never did one. I am a social worker and decided to use the vision board at work with my group of substance-abusing women. They liked the idea, and I did one myself with the group too. I had cut out a picture of a baby and glued it on the board and the group was surprised that I wanted another child since I was 37 (most in the group had babies very young). So I did the board, put it up, and thought about it sometimes, but that was it.

So, after I had surgery for the blocked tube and no pregnancy I decided to see a chiropractor and she did acupuncture too. As I lay on the bed with needles stuck all over I envisioned my belly growing with a baby inside. This went on for several months.

By February of the next year I had had enough with the stressful job working with substance-abusers and quit on a Friday. Saturday, my husband and I got a babysitter, went out for dinner, and had some drinks.

Two weeks later I was PREGNANT – due five days before my older child’s birthday. Interestingly enough, my son was born exactly five years after our first one, with the most beautiful blue eyes. No one knows where the blue came from – maybe the in-laws side – BUT the picture of the baby that I had cut out HAD BLUE EYES!!!

My second story:

I needed $500 to cover expenses and must have said it out loud a bunch of times. A week or so later my mother-in-law leaves $400 in cash for us after babysitting our two children. I was amazed and grateful. THEN a few weeks later she gives us $100 for an anniversary present. I got the $500 I asked for and am grateful every day.

I complete a grateful/thankful journal every night. I also steer clear of negative thinking as much as possible and have learned how to ask for things I want, not for what I don’t want. I incorporate The Secret into therapy with my clients too and sit back and watch the magic as people begin to feel better – when they actually practice it.

I am so glad that I decided to watch Oprah that day a few years ago and just recently I read the book and watched the movie. Thanks!
