She WALKED away
Submitted by: Anne
WashingtonI have a long time friend that got into a terrible car accident a year ago. Her pelvis was crushed, her arms splintered into fragments, muscles and tendons where torn and destroyed. She spent hours in surgery as doctors pulled out pieces of bone and desperately tried to piece her back together.
After the surgery they explained to all her loved ones, me included, that she would be in a wheel chair for AT LEAST a year. They explained that it simply wouldn’t be possible for her to physically stand. They forced her to take a few quick classes within the hospital on how to care for herself from her wheel bound position, and finally released her, after approving a living environment that she could function in as a cripple. My friend had seemed to not care much about this entire process. She had remained out of any discussion involving her “inability to walk.” On her release date she was wheeled to the hospital doors, where she stood up and walked out into the parking lot. She walked slow, and it looked like she wasn’t comfortable, BUT SHE WALKED TO THE CAR! AND SHE NEVER SAT BACK DOWN IN THAT WHEELCHAIR AGAIN.
It became immediately apparent that she had NEVER believed that she would need that chair. The thought of sitting for a year wasn’t even something she chose to think about. She didn’t believe that she was a cripple, even when the doctors told her she was. The universe granted her wish, even when all of us were expecting the opposite.
Most of us were quiet and confused for the rest of the day. We just didn’t understand how that could be possible. It defied everything we believed about the world. How can you walk with a crushed pelvis? How can your body hold your own weight when the muscles holding you up are completely destroyed? How can you heal so quickly and so perfectly days after your body was so mutilated? I started looking for answers after this event, and I found them.
