Once every school year, high school students are required to do course registration. Course sign ups allow us to choose our classes for the upcoming school year. It’s all based on GPA, grades, teacher and counselor approval.
Course registration depends on your grade level and your GPA. So, it starts off with the highest ranking juniors to the lowest, followed by the highest ranking sophomores to their lowest, and the highest ranking freshmen to their lowest. The higher you are, the more priority you get when it comes to signing up for classes.
I signed up for my classes in April, and I wasn’t told what I’d be taking until June. I was lucky to receive all of the classes I had signed up for! My friend and I had signed up for four of the same classes, and we were hoping to get all four together, plus our lunch period, resulting in five periods together! We didn’t get our schedules until August, though, so we had no idea if we’d have those classes or not.
Come late August, we see out schedules, and we only have one class together. I was devestated. We tried to reassure each other that we’d be fine, but with our friendship being rocky at the time, we had doubts that seeing each other so little would help us. I decided to make a change.
I began to act as though we had four periods together. I expressed gratitude at the fact that we managed to get the same classes and that we were fine and happy. At first, nothing happened until I realized I had to take action. I couldn’t just sit around and hope for things to just happen.
I emailed my counselor, and received an automated response. I knew that my email would not be looked at for a long time so I decided to email the person in charge of all scheduling. I told them of my hopes for improvement this year and how I hoped to switch my classes around in order to improve. They replied later that day, telling me they’d look into it.
The next day, I received a schedule change. My schedule gave my best friend and I three periods together! But, neither of us were satisfied. We still had different lunch periods. I began envisioning another schedule change and that we both had the same period lunch. I made myself a new schedule and made it my phone’s lock and home screen so that I’d see it every day. For a week I envisioned us having lunch together, and those other three class periods. I told myself things would work out, my counselor would reply and I’d receive my schedule change.
After a week, I finally got my change! We now have the same lunch period and classes together!
I’m so happy with the way things have worked out. I’m happy with how things are going to be this school year. I cannot wait for it to begin so that I can experience it the way I want with my best friend.
