I Saved My Dog’s Life
Submitted by: Theresa
OntarioI'm a 28 year old woman living in Ontario Canada, with an 18 month old son, and two miniature schnauzers.
Two days before mothers day, my dog Lucy started vomiting everywhere, and was “hovering” like she couldn’t sit down. I got her into the vets asap. While the vet was looking at her, she took a turn for the worse, and started shaking and frothing at the mouth. She gave me the bad news-it was going to be expensive, as she needed to run a bunch of tests to figure out what was wrong. We needed to come up with half the money for the tests asap, or they would have to put her down, as she was in a lot of pain. While I was talking to my husband trying to figure out where to scrape up the money, the vet said she could not stand it any longer, and whisked her away. The receptionist told me that I could figure out money when they had ran the tests, so I went home without even being able to say goodbye.
Ten minutes later, I get a phone call. They no longer need to run tests, as they did an x-ray and she had a bunch of kidney stones. One had completely blocked her urinal tract, making it impossible for her to urinate. The bad news was, I was going to have to come up with more than twice the down payment as before, and we were already scraping our pockets to come up with the cash to begin with..
I phoned my husband with the news, we cried because we knew we didn’t have the money.. And said we didn’t want to lose her. Then I said, let’s tell her to go ahead with the surgery as the decision needs to be made right away, and well figure out where to get the money later. I put the wheels in motion.
We sat on pins and needles for five hours, reciting over and over that she would be fine. Finally we got a phone call to tell us that she made it through surgery, but that it was a very close call, as her bladder was all ripped up, and also they exhausted most of their options trying to get the stone out, and finally knocked it out with a cat catheter. The doctor then informed me that she has a schnauzer herself, and so bonded with Lucy.. And because of that bond, she fought extra hard to save her life. She thought for awhile that there was nothing she could do, but went above and beyond in her determination to get her home to me.
