kenyaI am Damaris Mwangi from Kenya. I am currently in college studying for a diploma in Nursing. I love writing and watching my story animated on YouTube inspired me me even more. I don't know much about writing but I am willing to learn from you guys. Hope we get along. Thank you.
Hi there! I am Ris from Kenya. I know most of you know my country for sure and this is my crazy story.
I live with my parents in a small village in Kenya. My family was an average family, we were not rich. My parents were small scale farmers, and my dad was a boda boda rider. Boda bodas are bicycles and motorcycle taxis and that is how my dad got money to feed us and educate us. I was the first born and soon I was going to join high school. And not just any high school. I wanted to join one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the country. So I made sure I got the highest marks and that way my dad would not refuse to admit me to my dream school.
But my dream came crashing down when my dad got admitted to a hospital after he got into an accident with his boda boda. And that meant there was no way I was going to go to my dream school. But, I was determined to join high school no matter what.
So that evening I went to a nearby cyber cafe. I searched for any job I could do that would pay well but nothing seemed to be going my way. Of course, I am only a minor, so there is nobody who would want to hire you. That was what I was saying to myself in my mind. So then I closed my eyes and said a short prayer. God I know I have not been attending church service for the past month or so but I promise I will attend every church service and even help to clean the church if you can help me. Please, God, do not punish me this way, at least let me find something that I can do, and Amen.
I continued to search for jobs hoping I could find something. Finally, my eyes lit up when I saw an advertisement about a writing competition and the winner would be rewarded 10 million dollars. I could not believe my eyes! I said God thank you so much! Finally, you have answered my prayers. Woohoo! I shouted out loud as everyone in the cafe looked in my direction but I did not even care.
For the next two weeks, I buried myself in writing. I had to make sure that my story was the best. It had been a week after I submitted my story and I had completely forgotten about it until my phone rang with the most exciting news. I had won the competition and the CEO of the company wanted to see me in person. I ran to my mom who was in the kitchen and told her the good news. She said, “Congratulations my dear, I knew one day you were going to make me proud, good luck my darling you have my blessings.”
And that is how I changed my family. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you to The Secret To Teen Power.
