Three years ago my partner Christopher and I were on a dead end track. We were not particularly unhappy, but neither were we happy. We were scraping by on the good will of close friends and things were starting to get a bit tense sometimes.

Then we started seriously studying our spirituality. I had been born into a non-religious family but had brought myself up in a Baptist church. in my teen years I had walked away from the church because of the hypocrisy and lack of education about their beliefs that I saw in many of those around me. I began looking for a belief system that matched my observations of reality. Buddhism was a decent match, but not everything I looked for. The Wiccans had a healthy look at what I termed Magick, so I adopted much of their ritual along with both the Christian and Buddhist outlook. I had no name for the system, but it was working for me. I undertook to live a year within the Wiccan system to better understand it and my partner and our roommate joined me in this journey.

Sometime in the middle of that year we discovered The Secret. Immediately I recognized its relevance and its simple description of my inner beliefs. But the thing about The Secret that really caught my attention was the fact that it was based, not on worry about some unproven and unprovable soul or the destination of that soul after death, but of the so much more important proofs of the working of the divine in our daily lives here and now.

In the spiritual systems I had previously studied one of the worst parts was that you had to take all of it on faith and that there was never a way to ‘know’ that what you were doing was truly affecting your life until long after the fact. It created a feeling of anxiety and worry instead of a feeling of comfort and fulfillment most of the time. In these systems you would cast your ritual, say your prayer, or meditate on the problem and eventually some answer might present itself. This did not feel to me like the answer to my spiritual questions. The Secret offered immediate, right now answers that were confidence inspiring and fit with what I had lived in my life.

Watching the film and reading the book made all of us aware of how much we had already been using The Secret to enhance our lives in small ways. I, for example, had not been forced to walk farther than thirty feet to get into a store (even in the evening rush) in years, and I rarely got stopped at traffic lights when in a hurry. But this was a system of belief that not only explained these ‘minor miracles’, but also taught me to grow them into Major Miracles. The same being true for my partner and friend.

We began to encourage each other to think more positively about the problems that faced us. We watched The Secret monthly and discussed it almost daily as we experimented with our limitations. And, slowly but surely, our lives began to even out as worry took a back seat.

Two years ago, still broke, but knowing that something good was coming, my partner and I got a phone call from a close friend who lived in Texas. He wanted us to move to Houston to help him out with his job, and to help us escape our financial problems. Our roommate was itching to get back out on his own and felt he could not do this sharing his living space, so our time was growing short to find a new place. Having no money whatsoever in the bank and with no sources available that we had not tried to tap previously, we told our friend that we would move to Texas if we could find the funds by the end of the month.

Christopher and I began to think in terms of how great the move would be, how being in a new place would allow us to start over with a new outlook and how we would be adding to our happiness. We began to look at what we had in Indiana and appreciate it with a new eye as we saw how it would all improve. The Secret kicked in…

April 14th, 2010, just two weeks after we had spoken to my friend on April 1st (a day not un-noted by the irony part of my mind) we had managed to have almost $3000 fall into our laps. The trip was on.

With our faith in ourselves and the help of The Secret to carry us through we arrived in Houston carrying all of our belongings in a U-haul truck. We had about a hundred dollars cash and had to depend on our friend for everything until the jobs kicked in and then everything took off!

Since then we have stopped worrying entirely. Based on our experience with gaining what we needed when we needed it, and believing that we have the power within ourselves to continue to have all that we need and more, we have continued to thrive here. Every time something happens that could impact our lives negatively, we turn to The Secret and to the lessons we have learned about the power we have to take control of our own destinies, and we come out on top! Twice I have been shifted out of jobs that were becoming a burden and twice I had no clue what was next. Twice I have ended up with better situations through knowing in my mind what I needed and depending on the Universe to give it to me.

No, life is not perfect. I am not sure that is what I am looking for. I enjoy challenges that are reasonable. But we no longer sweat the little things, like being without money for rent or food. We no longer worry about how other people will impact our lives. We no longer worry about whether we will be able to have a good life. We know The Secret. Life is good.
