Twelve years ago my left foot started swelling unexpectedly during the day. After 5 years of doctors, tests and heartaches I was finally diagnosed with primary Lymphodema. A part of me believes I attracted this diagnosis to myself because I went searching for it and kept identifying with all I read online.

Anyway for the past 6 years my life has been MLD therapists, compression stockings, nightly bandaging, trousers, ugly flat shoes, deflated self esteem and fearing hot weather as this worsens the condition.

At the start of 2015, one of my intentions for the year was a perfectly functioning lymphatic system that adapts to all weathers. I wrote it down, stored it away and as often as I could I gave gratitude over the next few months for my perfectly functioning lymphatic system, envisioning myself feeling unself-conscious in short skirt and heels. I wore my compression stockings daily but I ceased bandaging every night and stopped making the condition the main focus of my life. If people asked, I always said it was better and then changed the topic. I also changed my diet, starting exercising and eating right.

The Universe came through for me. In those months, my condition was markedly improved. I now own and can wear a respectable collection of heeled shoes! I no longer need to wrap nightly and I can wear short skirts instead of the baggy trousers I always wore.

Today was the first time I saw my MLD therapist in 10 months and she couldn’t get over my transformation; and not just my condition, she said I was glowing and looked radiant.She kept asking me what I had done and I just smiled and said that an attitude of gratitude saved me this year and this is what I tell everyone.

If anyone is feeling down from some ‘incurable’ illness, be grateful for the health you’ve received in the past, the health you do have and imagine yourself whole and healthy free from dis-ease. Then go about your life, start treating your body like a temple, eat healthy foods, laugh more often, move more and you will see the magical healing unfold in your life. Just believe!
