A Post-It Dream Come True!
Submitted by: Charlene W
Dallas, TXI am a single 29 year old woman who was a scientist and am now back in college studying mechanical engineering. I live with my sweet cat in Dallas, TX.
A few months after I had graduated with my science degree I knew I had picked the wrong field. I should have gone for the engineering degree instead. I thought about it a lot but thought it an impossible dream with my work schedule. Also the cost of a second degree also made it seem unlikely.
After I had been working as a chemist of 3 years, my friend told me about The Secret. I read it soon after. I started to write different goals on colorful post-it notes and would scatter my notes throughout the pages of my Secret book. I also did this with things I was grateful for. I would look through my book when it was slow in the lab (and when my boss wasnt around of course =) Results werent really evident in the beginning but I did FEEL a lot better about my life.
Six months past and a big event in my life happened – I was laid off in the summer of 2008. I decided to reapply for college (spring semester 2009) but my main focus was to find a new job. Months went by and nothing. Before I knew it, it was January 2009 and college was starting! My first day back was a little unbelievable. I couldnt believe I was really there following my dreams!
My finances have been crazy tight since going back but Im doing it! Actually just this past month when rent came up I was running very low on cash and had no idea how I was going to pay rent. A couple days before it was due I wrote a check for the amount that was due, stuck it to my bedroom mirror and next to it posted a pink post-it note with PAID and would look at it in the morning and before bed.
The first approached (due date) and nothing. Yet on the 3rd something happened. I went to check my mailbox as usual and noticed a letter from my grandma. Strange, my grandma and I are not close so I was very surprised to see it. I opened it and there was a letter and a check that covered my rent and late fees and some money left over for good groceries! What a shock! I guess my mother had mentioned my current financial troubles to my grandmother. She ended up saving me and I still have a home to live in! Thank goodness!
