I work for a great organization and one day I longed for a career progression and a tutor position came along. I went for the interview and I was mocked for not getting the position. I went for the feedback and was basically told I wasn’t going to get another promotion position as my interview skills were rubbish. What I didn’t know was that the Universe had a plan for me.

A few years ago I was doing a training course with a friend. She emailed me to tell me that a position had opened in her department and that I should apply. I had nothing to lose but everything to gain. I had everything riding on this. I had a new supervisor at work. She had been promoted and to say that she had it in for me was an understatement. She bullied me to the point where I felt broken. So I thought, no I’m not having this, I got myself a career coach and I signed up for a free cv and interview workshop. I got the job description, went through each point they were looking for and I prepared.

I worked 12 hours shifts. I came home and went through my examples. I asked a friend for an interview practice. My coach was brilliant, she made me realize that I could do it and I can progress and it didn’t matter what my supervisor or what anyone else thought of me. The day of the interview came, my boyfriend kissed me for good luck and off I went.

I went into the interview and I was the last candidate. I gave it my all. I had the knowledge and experience. I came home and spoke to my boyfriend and then went to my phone. I could have used this example or that example. I had applied to this department a few years ago but at the time the position was part-time and the funding was cut.

I checked the emails and waited for the phone to ring. Then I thought that by me sitting there waiting, I was putting doubt out there. So I carried on. I looked for new clothes and created space.

The following morning the phone rang as I was sitting on the sofa. It was the recruitment team asking how I got on. Then they said that the department was very impressed and they would like to say congratulations! I burst out in tears, it was a feeling like no other.

The following day I walked into my old manager’s office and said I would like to thank you for my time here but I am leaving. I then called my bullying supervisor into a meeting to say I wanted to let them know that I was leaving.

At the moment I am biding my time, waiting for my start day but it will come soon and I will be ready to join my new team. If I can do it so can you. You must believe in yourself, on my off days I would read The Secret and it gave me faith and hope.
