Acting As If

McKinney, TXI am a divorced mother of one very amazing child, and I am now embarking on the most exciting time of my life!
After watching The Secret, I was able to look back in my life and make the connection between the times I received what I believed, and how the Universe was moving in the direction I desired so long as I did believe. There are two times that especially stick out in my mind:
1. I had finished undergraduate school and desperately wanted to go to school to get a graduate degree. I had been talking about doing this for at least two years. While I was on a trip my senior year in college, I met another student from another school and ended up applying to get my graduate degree there. I signed up for classes and filled out what I thought was all the necessary paperwork. Then I realized there were things I had forgotten. It would mean a delay entering the program for a year.
The day I was going to call an cancel my classes, I received a letter in the mail telling about a fellowship. I didn’t call to cancel my classes. Instead, I filled out the paperwork, sent it, and called a few days later to see if it had been received. I found out that the decision would be made by the following Friday. In the meantime, I went window shopping and picked out the clothes that I would buy once my fellowship had been confirmed. I acted as if it was already mine.
The day that I knew the decision would be made, I jumped every time the phone rang. First it was my brother saying he was bringing over my neice. Next it was my sister-in-law saying my brother was bringing over my niece. The third time it was a professor at the college asking if I was still interested in the fellowship! Unbeknown to me, after I made the wish to go into that field, the woman for whom I had worked in high school had met the woman making the decision on the fellowship. When I had sent in my application, I included a letter of reference from my former employer. Receiving a reference from someone she already knew definitely tipped the scales in my favor. As a result, I had my graduate school paid for in full: tuitions, fees, and a living stipend!
2. Before I had even finished the aforementioned degree, I had lined up a job. It wasn’t really my first choice, but it was something. After my six month probationary period, I took a vacation day and interviewed for my dream job. I waited and waited for the call saying I’d gotten the job. One day, just to pass the time, I decided that I needed to do a few things so that I would be ready to leave when the call came. I planned programs and got materials ready for three months’ time. I cleaned out all of the files in my office. I acted as if the new job was already mine. Then, two months after the interview and about the time I was wrapping up working ahead, I received a job offer. My future boss had wanted to hire me right away, but she was told that she had to interview more people. She kept going through the motions until they told her that she had interviewed enough people. And then she made the call.
It wasn’t until I watched The Secret that I realized how pretending as if I already had these things made them materialize. I’ve always told people that I’m a really lucky person, and I still tell them that. The only difference is that now I know how to make all that luck by choosing how I think and act.
