I recently graduated from law school and everyone around me frequently talked about how impossible it is for new law graduates to get jobs. There were articles and studies coming out, also describing the difficulties new law graduates would face finding any work at all, and talking about what a bad decision going to law school was for people today, because of the downturn in the economy that especially affected the legal job market.

With all of the stress and anxiety my friends and fellow law students talked about, I started to get worried myself. In my field, I am qualified and have lots of experience, however I was rejected from almost 10 jobs that I interviewed for. I had started to feel and believe everything people were saying about the job market without realizing it.

Even with the rejections and the many hours of crying after one rejection, then another, a part of me remembered The Secret, The Power and The Magic which I read and listen to often.

I started to visualize my name on a business card for the office I wanted to work with, a public interest law society, and put a card on my desk where I saw it everyday. I also typed up and emailed myself the offer letter I would receive when I was hired. I still had some anxiety and worry though.

Then I got the news that I was not given an offer by this office in their first round of hires. I was devastated and shocked. I briefly wondered if I had chosen the wrong career path and if I had been wrong about my passion for being a lawyer who helps others that do not know their rights and need an advocate.

But I knew in my heart I couldn’t have been wrong. I kept visualizing and speaking positively when people asked, “Do you have a job yet?” I applied for other jobs and was about to book a trip to another city for an interview, even though I didn’t really want to leave my favorite city where I lived and my home where my dream job is. Just as I was ordering the ticket for my trip, I got the call!

The job I had not been made an offer with initially called me and said they would like to hire me after all, because some more funding had come through. I was thrilled! Shortly after, I received my offer letter, just as I had pictured it.

Don’t give up! Keep having faith and visualizing.

It will work out as what you wanted or something even better.
