I Wanted To Be The Career Professional I Used To Be.
My family which included me, my husband and our two kids, came to this country looking for a better life. We were high ranking professionals our country, my husband even had an assigned company car, exclusively given to top executives. I was also a top executive at an international company. My appearance was always impeccable, I mean clothes, my shoes and I always had a neat manicure. However, when we got to the USA we had to work doing anything that would allow us to feed our children and pay for a home. One of those jobs consisted of delivering newspapers to store chains. Besides delivering the papers we would clean and maintain the racks and put the papers on them.
I remember one day, I was seated on the dirty floor of one of those stores, I recall time it was a gas station. I was cleaning the rack and then I began to cry, remembering my past life. I looked at my nails. They were dirty and broken, nothing like they use to be when I was an executive back in my country. I can remember that I was looking at my nails and making a promise to myself, that one day my nails would be clean and well maintained again. It seems like a frivolous thing but it was not. At that moment, what I was doing was envisioning myself in the future, as a top executive again.
Today, I work for a well recognized fortune 500 company, I got an MBA and I am doing the same type of job I used to do when I still lived in my original country. It took me 10 years to reach my dream but I did it.
