The pefect job
Submitted by: Evelyn R.
San Pedro, CAI grew up on the East Coast in poverty. One thing my mother taught us was to have faith. She prayed for everything all the time... it was so annoying to me to hear her pray aloud, but in the end, I realized she gave me the greatest gift of all: faith and hope.
I needed work to support my three little girls. I had no car, and no income except welfare. I wanted to get a job, but had no idea how, so I called a toll-free prayer line to ask for help. The lady told me to get out the Yellow Pages and start at A, and dial numbers. She said a very positive prayer with me.
I took the book out and dialed the first number listed under the A’s. The man said, “Hey, I was just writing an ad to put in the paper! Come on in.” The job was data entry. He said the machine was older, but he liked it (amazingly, I had been sent to school to learn that very machine in Virginia!).
I explained I would have to take the bus and also that I would have some challenges with the fact that I had three children, so I needed odd hours. He suddenly stood up and handed me a set of keys… to a car! He said, “See that Cadillac out there? I need it moving to keep it oiled and running properly.” He also said I could bring the children with me to work and do any hours I wanted.
I had pictured a job where I could bring the girls, but the car was an amazing added bonus! It was a HUGE old black Fleetwood with big pointy fenders… I felt like my head must have looked the size of a lemon driving that thing, and I burst out laughing as I drove off the lot.
I will always be grateful for that chance. This happened because I visualized the situation coming true, I am sure of it.
