Thank You For Giving Me A Bright Future
Submitted by: Thandi Sibisi
Johannesburg, South AfricaI am a young female of 23 years. Born and bred in South Africa. Today I run a successful Marketing and Communications Company and a charity organisation called The Thandiwe Foundation, which funds a cause for Education.
I first heard about The Secret when I was 21 years old. I saw Oprah reviewing the book. It became the most talked about book in my town. I always tend to think of myself as not being interested in trends, so I ignored it even though I love reading and am very philosophical.
At this time I was graduating from University. I am a very free-spirited person and hate rules and boundaries. So I have never worked for anyone, and the few times that I had a job I hardly kept it even for a month. After University I dreamed of starting my own company. I applied for funding and never got a single call back for 2 years. This year I had come to the end of my dream and knew that I will have to grow up, suck it up, and get a job.
One day I remember walking through the mall and I saw a poster at our leading book shop. The advertisement was about The Secret. I had my last R300, but something in me made use my last pocket money. I felt like I have tried everything and it is up to me to give it just one more try. So I bought the book with R218 and was left with R82. I used that to take a taxi home, and that was it.
Since I had no money to go anywhere, I locked myself in my room and read and read. I did exercises and gave it my all. To tell you the truth, I enjoyed every minute of it. I had nothing to lose.
I remember the first day I just happened to miss my ex boyfriend who I hadn’t seen in years. A few minutes later, say 5 minutes, my phone rang and I almost fainted when I saw his name on my caller ID. I was SHOCKED!!! I asked him why he was calling and he said I just crossed his mind. From that minute onwards, I just went crazy. I remember telling my roommate that from today I will make a thousand rands or more every day without fail. I told her jokingly that I think I will be moving out in a month to my own beautiful apartment. She said, “You are being silly”. She waved me away, and probably thought I had lost it.
I was smiling, singing, and started jogging again as this relaxes me. I would read the book from cover to cover every day. I had all the time, I had nothing else to do, couldn’t afford other luxuries.
About a week later I got called for an interview. I couldn’t believe my luck. My dream of becoming an entrepreneur also never left me. I went to the interview. What happened after this was an absolute miracle. The Director of the company said to me he is not interested in giving me a job. He said he has never seen such passion in his life and with that being said, he would like to fund my business for six months. He said he was investing in talent. I walked out with a cheque of R15,000 rands that day.
Today is four months later and my company is doing amazingly well. I have contracts with leading companies doing their PR work and marketing. Today I have a great car, a beautiful apartment in a beautiful area. I have a boyfriend who loves me and supports me.
Now I want to grow my company even more, and buy a house for my parents and for myself.
My friend, by the way, is reading The Secret. And guess who’s laughing now?
Thank you so much for changing my life. I will never look back or suffer in my life.
Love
Thandi
