Six Weeks That Changed My Life
Submitted by: Andy B
Melton Mowbray, LEICSI am 28 years old and live with my fiancee in the heart of rural England. I am a creative writer by profession but it hasn't always been that way.
I grew up in a very working class family. I always excelled at school but still had it drummed into me that I shouldn’t get my hopes up and that good things only came to the lucky ones and the well to do. So it would come as no surprise to those of us that know The Secret that once I left school I went to work in a factory, where I stayed for nine long years. It was hot, sweaty, and smelly, and the people I worked with were generally aggressive and unpleasant, and every day I was working there I hated it a little bit more.
Naturally I tried everything I could to get out and to better myself. I had always dreamed of being a professional writer. So I researched courses to train as a creative writer. However, being surrounded by people constantly complaining that the pay was rubbish and you could barely afford to live led me to believe that I couldn’t afford the tuition fees. And guess what? I couldn’t!
I also had a passion for radio and often dreamed of working at a radio station. However each and every time I sent off my CV to a radio station I got the same reply; that I wasn’t qualified and had no experience.
For nine long years I ground it out on a factory production line, hating my job and feeling terrible for not being able to do anything about it.
And then, three years ago, I was given a copy of The Secret book and DVD. Over a weekend I read the book cover to cover and the following Monday I went into work, determined to put The Secret into practice. The change was both dramatic and immediate. The first thing I noticed was that I had a much more positive outlook. Every time I felt affronted by a colleague I checked my emotions and turned my thoughts to something more positive. I focused on all the good things that had happened in my day. Naturally I had to try really hard, as I was putting handles on buckets for eight hours, but nonetheless I still found things to be happy about and that day I went home in a really good mood for the first time since I care to remember.
When I got home my partner told me that we had no money left and had to ask her mother to lend us twenty pounds to last until payday later that week. I saw this as my chance to prove to myself that The Secret really does work. Without thinking I told her that she didn’t have to borrow the money and that I had twenty pounds at work that I could bring home. That night I went to bed and pictured the twenty pound note. I imagined myself holding it in my hand and just so that I’d know when I received it that it was MY twenty pound note, I gave it the number 500 written on it in blue marker. I had no idea how I was going to get this money, but I knew with absolute faith that I already had it in my hand.
The following day I went to work with the same air of positivity, and just before lunchtime the head of HR came downstairs and told me that I had won second place in the work lottery. The prize was twenty pounds, and sure enough, when I took the money out of the envelope, there was number 500 scrawled in blue marker across the face of the note. An alarm went off in my mind and I knew that I could make this work for me.
I started to actively use The Secret to better my career. Every night when I went to bed I imagined myself getting a phone call from my new employer telling me that I had the job. I experienced for myself the thrill and excitement of receiving this news, and on more than one occasion I actually cried tears of joy.
Over the next week I made sure that I was happy at work and that every day in the car on the way home I was satisfied with the job I had done that day and looked forward to the next day, knowing that the universe would return it to me for real. For seven days nothing happened, until I got a phone call from a friend telling me that she’d heard an advert on the radio saying that the station was looking for somebody to write the adverts, a job that combined my two greatest ambitions in life. I wasted no time and filled out the online application form. The next stage of the application was to write three advertising campaigns. I couldn’t believe it. By this point they hadn’t even asked to see my CV or qualifications! And now I had a really useful tool for using The Secret. While I was working on my sample scripts I was able to imagine that I was doing it for real and that this was my real job, and it felt great.
I passed the first interview and got down to the final three candidates. I was so excited because I KNEW that this was happening because of The Secret. Throughout the interview process I constantly kept imagining myself getting THAT phone call until it finally came. And the phone call was EXACTLY how I had imagined it.
Within six weeks of learning The Secret I had gone from a dead end job with no prospects to doing the one thing that I have wanted my whole life.
And it didn’t stop there. By applying The Secret I have gone from strength to strength and I am now the head of creative for a group of stations. I have also been a prolific creative writer in my spare time, writing short stories and articles. I’m currently working on a novel and I know it will get published because I’ve seen the front cover in my mind and held the novel in my hands.
