Hello,
I am a 21 year old student in Belgium. I study German and Swedish, and this year it was the first year that Afrikaans was given in my university as a subject on its own. I chose this, because my boyfriend (in that period) was obsessed with South Africa. In one of the latest lessons one of the professors visited our class to tell us that there were scholarships available for SA, and that we had to visit him if we were interested. Even though SA had nothing to do with German and Swedish, I wanted to take my chances… And guess what, I am chosen.
The conditions were the following ones:
1)My project should have something to do with German literature (I chose that option for my Bachelor paper), and the subject of our group: Writing Life (For example, how do authors present living in New York)
2)The project also should have a link with UWC (the university in SA I would go to)
3)I needed a promoter in Gent, if possible a professor from German lit
This is what they found:
Two youth books, written by a Dutch author in German about HIV in SA. HIV is the connection with Writing Life and with the projects UWC occupies with!!! That author lives in Capetown… where I am going to, and the books are translated in English, by a professor from UWC!!! My promoter turns out to be a German woman, that is at my Uni since 2008, who has occupied herself during years with the use of youth literature in schools… and that is what I want to investigate in SA!!! So it is just perfect.
And last week I was lying in my bed home, where I am only three or four times every month, and above me hangs a cheque that I printed from this website. It was dated July ’07… for 1000 Euros. My scholarship for South Africa is 1000 Euros, and I leave July ’08. I had really forgotten this cheque…. It is amazing. Thank you so much.
