Rich’s Rainbow
Submitted by: kathleen taylor
Towson, MDBorn in Baltimore, MD Great childhood. Married 1969, left three weeks before Rich was born.
My beautiful son, Richard Taylor, lost his life in a car crash on 9/11/1994. Rich fell asleep at the wheel after working all day at Nordstrom’s and went out to help his boss clean his family room carpet about 20 miles from our home.
Ten days after this tragedy I was quiet and asked Rich what he would show me to let me know that he was OK. Every parent needs to know that their child is OK.
The thought came back:”A Rainbow”. So, I told all of my friends what was told to me and some said “I saw a rainbow today” and I would say “A rainbow is a rainbow is a rainbow, I will know if it is from Rich. It won’t be like a regular rainbow.”
So, I did a bike-a-thon in Rich’s memory on his exact 21st birthday, May 7, 1995. Rich had ridden in many bike-a-thons for various causes.
The tour was 25 miles and of course, I was the last one to come back to the place where we started. 100 people waited for me to return. Riders ate hamburgers and hot dogs and left the school across from where Rich and I lived for 15 years.
They sat me down, it was 12 noon, and I looked up and saw a rainbow in the sky.
Not a regular one. No clouds, blue sky. The rainbow was the colors of a rainbow, but straight across the sky extending to our church, 15 houses from our home across the street.
I said that’s my boy. I had faith from 9/11/94 till 5/7/95 that I would know for sure it was from Rich. What better day to show me than his 21st Birthday!
PS. I have pictures.
