Gratitude

My best friend loaned me a copy of The Secret on CD, which I listened to in my car. When the section on gratitude began to play I couldn’t believe my ears. I had been using the instruction on gratitude for many years! When I was younger I had become depressed. To combat the depression I would lay in bed at night before falling asleep and thank God for all the good things in my life. At the worst parts of my depression, there didn’t seem to be much to be grateful for, so the list would start something like this, “Thank you God for the beautiful flowers with their amazing colors and wonderful smells, thank you God for giving me legs that work well because they allowed me to get where I needed to be today, thank you God for the sun’s warmth, thank you God for giving me a good brain that allows me to think, reason, understand, and move myself forward…” Once I got past the first few thank you’s more and more things sprang to mind that I was truly thankful for. I would fall asleep being reminded of how truly wonderful life was, how blessed I was, and all of the possibility of my next day, because I knew that in reality I was full, not empty! My life held great promise! God had been kind to me and I was the only thing that held me back. I still believe, to this day, that my only obstacle in life, truly, is me. If I believe that I can do something, I can. True inner belief is the miracle. Internal motivation is the fuel. Life can be eternally expansive!
