Getting My Dream Job
Submitted by: Diane S
Vernal, UTA believer that all dreams are possible.
I first moved to Utah five years ago and made a conscious decision that I would remain there for at least five years until one of my sons graduated from high school. In May he graduated and I decided it was time for me to make my move. I prayed that whatever place and whatever job was right for me, would be made abundantly clear so I wouldn’t have to make any tough decisions. I work for the federal government and wanted to transfer within the government. The exact agency didn’t matter to me. I started looking for jobs and I was able to find five jobs immediately that would match my qualifications.
One by one three jobs were eliminated until two jobs remained. I applied for both jobs. One job I got a notice, that while I was qualified, I was not selected for the position. This left only one job. This particular job was located in Hawaii and was with a different federal government agency. I started daydreaming about what it would be like to go to Hawaii. I had never been there before, but the idea really appealed to me. I bought a magazine one day and it had pictures of one of the Hawaiian Islands in the magazine and I would look at the pictures and imagine what it would feel like to be there. I would smell the water, feel the breezes, and imagine what it would be like to watch the sunrise and say a morning prayer. I started researching the island and everything about it.
Several weeks (a few months actually) had gone by and I hadn’t heard anything. I kind of wondered about it, but I kept talking about it to everyone – about how I had applied for this job in Hawaii and how I really wanted the job and I hoped would get it. This little doubtful part of me would always nudge me and say, “Quit talking about it like you already have the job,” but I was so excited and I felt so sure I would get it.
One day I get a call telling me that they had narrowed the selection down to a top few and they would like me to come there for an in-person interview. Of course I agreed to go. When I got there, I did my interview and had a little extra time to explore. I did get to go to the bay and do my morning meditation and prayer. I also met a native Hawaiian who was retired and who told me that if I write my name in the sand I will return. So I did that. I felt the interview went well and I was excited when I got home and people asked me about it.
A few weeks went by and I didn’t hear from them. I started wondering and doubting again, so on a Thursday I called the personnel office in Maryland to ask the status. I was told that I was not selected for the job. I was a little disappointed and surprised to tell you the truth, but I decided, “Well, I did ask God to make sure the job I get is the right job for me and the right place, and to make it abundantly clear.”
On Monday I was talking to another friend of mine about another job opportunity during my lunch break. When I got back to my desk, I found out that I had an e-mail to call the Hawaii office as soon as possible. I called and they asked if I was still interested in the job. I said, I thought you selected the other person? And they told me that the other person had turned the job down. I was in such shock, I asked for a day to think about it and discuss it with my husband since I had already told him that I did not get the job.
Well, I said yes to the opportunity, and I am so amazed at how it all worked out. The person at the personnel office even told me that there was little to no chance that the other person would turn down the job, and she said she was sorry I didn’t get selected.
All things are possible if you want them – if you believe and let God or the Universe take care of the details. Although I had a few times where I started to doubt, I kept going back to my original request which was to get the perfect job in the perfect place that was right for me. I am so grateful.
I read The Secret when it was first released and just read The Power about a week ago. Thank you for everything.
