Before The Secret Existed.

Albany NY areaI am about to retire and looking forward to it. I am 73 years old, have 3 great, married sons, and a total of 5 grandchildren.
Well, I guess The Secret and the law of attraction have always existed but there just was not a name for it that I knew of back then. This started in the early 70s. I had gotten married in 1972.
I had always wanted a camp. Around here, a camp is basically a second home on or very near a lake. It could be a shack or it could be a million dollar log home. We were newlyweds so we did not have much money, especially for a second home. But I had this in my head, that I was going to eventually have a place to go on weekends with my family to go boating, fishing, have campfires, and everything that goes along with that.
Well, as my life went on I was convinced I would eventually have that special place. So I started to put away anything I thought would furnish the camp. Whenever I would need a new dish set or flatware set I would buy the new one and put away the old one in a box labeled “Camp”. Along the way, I would even shop for decorative items to buy such as Adirondack lamps, blankets, bowls, etc.
That is how I lived. I lived like I already had it!
Eventually, we bought a trailer on a lake in the Adirondacks for $5,000. While that was not my goal, it served its purpose for 5 years. We would take off and go to it every Friday from Memorial day until Labor Day. It was awesome.
Then one rainy day during one weekend, I saw an ad in the paper for a camp across the street from the lake for $40,000. At that time, that was pretty cheap for that. Most were going for $70,000 to $80,000 just for fixer-uppers. Well, I had to go see it. It was perfect. It had 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, one not working. The second floor had its own deck and downstairs had a huge deck in front overlooking the lake. I was in love. So the seller asks me if I want it. I had to confess and said, “Yes, I do but I do not have the money.” He said, “Can you get a mortgage?” I said, “Yes but I do not have a down payment.” He said, “I will give you $5,000 for the down payment and you have a year to pay me back.”
I could not believe it. It turns out that he bought it in foreclosure 2 weeks before for $25,000 and just wanted to turn around and sell it. I was able to sell the trailer for $5,000 and I paid him back in 3 months. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And by that time, I had 6 very big boxes labeled “Camp”. We enjoyed 15 awesome summers on the lake in that camp. We have a ton of videos and pictures, and stories to remember.
It really was all about believing, gratitude, positive thinking, and tunnel vision about what you want. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
