ASK YOURSELF: AM I TRULY ALIVE?
Submitted by: Jonna Nisu
NorwayWhen you look at your life, does life and being alive mean that your heart is still pumping, your veins are flooded with warm red liquid pulsing through your body, and you are breathing oxygen into your lungs at a secure life-giving pace?
Yes, in the physical sense we are alive from the moment our heart starts beating and to the moment it halts, never starting again.
Here comes the tough question, what are you doing with it? Are you attracting more life in and around you? What does life in its true sense mean?
Is it a beautiful house, a new car, a loving partner, a good solid job, great kids, long time friends and yearly holidays?
Yes, in the material sense life is all the things we want to have around us. Things that we think define us as people.
For some strange reason that definition often turns lacking. There is an emptiness to these definitions. We get the promotion we have spent years working for and suddenly – it doesn’t define us anymore. There is no life to it, suddenly we find ourselves repeating, “I have no life,” because we spend most of our time at the office. Our children miss us, and once we are at home, we all just shout at each other out of common frustration of that lacking connection.
Yet, we have all those things around us that we believe make it a life. We have many rooms to spend time in, drifting to separate spaces with our spouses and our children. We close doors seeking for something lost in ourselves. There are small fibs that we ignore in the hope that they will eventually go away. Our long time friends turn up once a year in their new cars with their new spouses and after brief moments of awkward reunion we are back to our normal pace, shushing kids away from the new flat screen TV with news about distant catastrophes that have ended hundreds or thousands of lives somewhere in the world. Houses have fallen in earthquakes, cars are floating in floods, a holiday has turned into a death sentence for someone.
There is a passing sting on our hearts, but there is nothing we can do about it. Is there?
In the mental and spiritual sense, yes there is actually.
If your desire is to create a better world, you can start with yourself. You can start seeking that feeling of life in every moment – because each moment counts. Any minute now the life you have created around you might turn out to be something completely different.
There is more to each of us than just a beat that is counted by our short term hearts.
We can stop drifting aimlessly and thinking that life equals only being alive and having those certain defining things in it. We can start thinking what we can do to make ourselves feel alive and how we can spread that feeling of life around us. Find that feeling of love in each action we take, each connection we make, each word we say, each smile we give. In the end, change is easily initiated – we all hold that first spark in ourselves.
This is what life is. It’s using every moment to remember that life itself is the optimal experience. Life is also meant to be shared and spread around. When you give life, you will receive life.
What are you doing with it? How are you living all these precious moments of life? Are you attracting more life in and around you?
