Using certainty to land a dream internship
from Orlando, FL
When I first found out about an internship opportunity in the field I was studying that was very prestigious and well paid, I immediately wanted to go out for it. The test for the internship was months away, and I remember telling everyone I was going to get that internship. Although it was very competitive and still a long time from even being possible, and I lacked the experience people said I needed, I still believed the internship was mine.
I took the test and was one of the highest scorers in the country. I got a fantastic internship at a newspaper and got to live within walking distance of the beach in a gorgeous condo. I made great friends, got fantastic work experience, and was considered a star in the newsroom. I was only able to accomplish it because I believed in myself and was certain the opportunity would be mine.
The best part about this story is that, because of the recession and layoffs, I was told a few weeks after I was offered the position that the newspaper I was going to might have to back out of the program. I kept making my plans as if everything were perfectly fine, and in the end it was. They kept the internship program and I was able to have my dream summer.
